It’s DIY Friday- again! Since I’m on a mission to organize every single item in the house, I decided to take on a DIY Furniture Makeover (with Food Storage Containers Organization Tips) for today’s post. Initially, I bought this piece of furniture for shoe storage but hasn’t been used as intended until my DIY-ing instinct took over. Now, it served as our version of a junk drawer since we moved to our house almost six months ago.
The Furniture Makeover
The furniture piece was Espresso finish, and my goal is to repurpose the piece with white paint. First things, first. I sanded the surface with sandpaper to rough it up a little, so the primer has something to adhere to. Then, I removed residue with a tack cloth. Moving on to the next three steps, I primed it, painted it, and protected it. I used an oil based primer since the surface is high gloss finished and I applied two coats of it. After 30 minutes of applying the first oil based primer, I applied another coat of it and I let it dry. Once it’s dried after two hours, I sanded the surface again and started with the 1st coat of paint. I applied three coats using a mini foam roller and sanded the surface every after each coat to remove any drips or residue on the piece.
Next, I used a new mini foam roller and new tack cloth in wiping the surface to avoid transfer of lint or tiny pieces of fuzz before polyurethane coat application. Finally, I let it dry for 72-hours to do away with sticky surface.
The result? See photos below.
Food Storage Containers Organization Tips
It’s time to organize our food storage containers! Did you guess that this furniture piece has officially become the home for our food storage containers? When we moved to our house, I wasn’t worried about the food storage containers since we only have very few and I can just sneak them into one of the kitchen cabinets until we use them again. Well, not after the festivities last month. Wait, am I the only one who acquired more containers? I hope not! And for the record, I’m still a minimalist. 🙂
Here are the five quick and easy food storage containers organization tips:
1. Make an inventory of your food storage containers.
2. Purge and declutter. Keep ONLY the ones you can’t live without.
3. Separate the lids and containers to maximize space.
4. Group similar items together and identify which ones you can easily nest inside of one another.
5. Use a bin to corral the lids.
Next time you buy food storage containers, choose items of the same type. It makes organizing much simpler!
