The DIY shoe storage bench makeover is one of the small projects I have wanted to do since I am entirely updating the color scheme of our home interior. My goal is to create a bright and airy space without purchasing new furniture pieces. I like DIY makeover projects that are quick and simple of which cost is minimal.
I originally bought this shoe storage bench at Wayfair. It sure was one of the furniture pieces we purchased few weeks after we moved into our house. At first, I was in love with the idea of having dark furniture while keeping the minimalist style. But as we move closer to our one-year anniversary here, the more I am drawn to the idea of having white furniture pieces instead. Why? Because with white, it is easier to decorate. And if you are like me who once in a while wish to have bright color decors, then you’ll find it more advantageous.
This DIY makeover took me about a day to complete considering the drying time and paint applications in between. I applied four coats of Valspar paint after using two coats of deglosser. Then, I updated the fabric with neutral colors.
Steps On How I DIY Our Shoe Storage Bench
Step 1: Remove hinges and cushion while prepping for a paint job.
Step 2: Apply deglosser with a clean, dry lint-free cloth to rub into the surface.
Step 3: Gather all materials and start painting. For this furniture piece, I applied four coats of Valspar paint to get the maximum result. After the final paint coat application, let it dry.
Step 4. Now, it is time for cushion TLC. Gather all the materials: scissors, fabric (your choice), and a staple gun.
Note: I did not remove the old fabric since it is not bulky or in bad shape.
Step 5. Start stapling the fabric to the cushion. Complete all four sides, and there, you now have a brand new looking cushion.
Step 6. Attach the cushion and the bench using the original hinges.

It feels like for every DIY makeover project I completed, I am feeling closer to getting the look that I am after for our house. Although, I can always find something to fix and update around the house. So, the work never ends!
