Before I begin this post about how to organize the fridge (large or small), I wanted to throw in a disclaimer that there is no same way of doing it since every family has different needs and preferences. The reason why I choose to tackle this is because I am a believer that if I can help a few people in their home organization journey in small ways like giving tips and resources, then I have served the purpose of this site.

If you have been following along, thank you. You know that my husband and I are in our journey of adopting my two nephews since August 2016. To date, the case is still under review. If you are new here, welcome. You can read our adoption journey in this post. So, for now, our home is consisted of my husband, our almost 6-year old Shih Tzu, and myself. You would probably think that organization must be quick and easy considering it is just us. Hmmm, not so! I still have days where I wonder how I can keep things organized. It’s a process, and the truth is, I am trying to think forward regarding my organization strategy so that when the boys join us, I will not be in for a surprise. I do not like surprises at all! Am I over preparing? Maybe! But I would rather stay ahead of the game.
Since I had completed our kitchen makeover last week, I know that the next thing I want to tackle is our fridge. We do not cook as often as we should, and we do not eat a lot either. We cut back from drinking sodas over a year ago. So, do not be surprised at how our fridge looks like in the inside. 😀 One thing that stands out on how I organized our fridge is using acrylic organizers. They are my go-to when organizing any space in our home. I love the simplicity of its design, and yet, it looks elegant.
How to Organize the Fridge (large or small)
One: Keep items based on your family’s needs and preferences. As I mentioned, between my husband and I, we stayed away from sodas and we do not often cook so, our fridge is not fully stock.
Two: Use acrylic organizers to corral items in the fridge. It has sizes and shapes variations so, it is easy to pick what you need and it is inexpensive.
Three: Use other storage containers based on your needs. Organizing does not mean everything has to be a perfect match. After all, we have to live life instead of being so contained in the idea of perfection.
Four: Make an inventory of the items in your fridge before heading out to grocery shopping. I don’t know about you, but every time I go grocery shopping, I want to buy all the good stuff I can see and touch. Well, we have rectified that issue. 😜 It is almost a year ago since we decided that my husband would do the shopping and it works perfectly for us, not to mention his conviction of staying within the budget. Do I still do grocery shopping? Of course, but only if I have to for few items!
Five: Move the existing items forward when replenishing your fridge and place the new grocery items at the back. My fridge organization method is last in, last out to avoid wasting foods and any other items.
Tip: Acrylic Lazy Susan Turntable is a space and time saver. A must-have! I found ours at HomeGoods.
Six: Be flexible. I know that when the boys join us, our fridge will not look like this. But at least, I now have ideas on how to do it when that time comes with the intention of keeping it organized.
Seven: Clean your fridge monthly and evaluate what works and what does not in your organization method. Ask yourself these questions: 1) Does the method help my family? If not, how can I improve it? 2) Does organizing our fridge makes me happy or it just adds up to my already full schedule and therefore, I resent doing it? 3) In what other ways I can be more efficient in my organization?
Regardless of how large or small your fridge is, the seven steps can help you navigate your way to an organization method that works for you and your family. Remember, the primary goal of organizing is to make our life easier so that when we look for an item/s, it saves us time. And absolutely, not spending more $$ to make the space perfect.
How do you organize your fridge? What type of organizers do you use? Do you find your family and yourself happier with your organization method? If not, are you trying to tweak it?
